Oriental Co-Co Clock

This is a fantasy cuckoo clock I designed and created in Maya. The concept of this clock is meant to capture the simple yet imaginative life of three friends, and the story of them finding their lost cat.

In order to stay true to the design of a cuckoo clock, I have made sure that the clock contained 4 key elements that I find essential as parts of a traditional cuckoo clock. In order going from top to bottom, we have the cuckoo bird (cat with its tail on fire), The revolvers(two birds flying in and out of their birdhouses), the genre scene(kids looking for their missing cat), and lastly the pendulum(oriental cloud symbol).

There are a total of 6 characters in the scene. I have chosen to model them in a specific style where despite them being rather low poly, I have selectively chosen which lines I want to emphasize and which to be smoothed through manipulation of their normal map. This allows the models to take on a particular sculpted look while not looking overly blockly.

The main body of the clock consists of a lot of oriental elements. I borrowed many architectural design elements from traditional Chinese/Japanese structures. I have intentionally made the silhouette of the clock very verticle, as I am trying to give it more of a fantastical feeling the way a child would imagine their surrounding. In the eyes of the kids, this is a flying secret base that they live in, despite it possibly being merely a pile of rubble in reality.
